This afternoon I ventured deep into Brooklyn for the Coney Island Mermaid Parade*. My plan was to meet up with a few friends, but the Island was so packed it was impossible to find them...so, I pulled out my camera.
From fins to tails, fashionable aquatic creatures strutted their stuff on the boardwalk. There were a few who should have been arrested by the the nautical fashion patrol, but for the most part the mermaids were well-behaved.
It was fun to experience a parade that was wildly creative, savvy, and a little political. Check out more photos in our album.
*Historic Bit : the Mermaid Parade began in 1983 as a way to commemorate Coney Island's forgotten Mardi Gras which lasted from 1903 to 1954.
