A-list designers take fashion to the pavement with Sidewalk Catwalk, an exhibition, organized by the Fashion Center Business Improvement District. Clad in garments that can withstand any weather, 32-mannequins are lined up for what could be Manhattan's longest runway show ever, ending September 3rd. Last Thursday, I took the stroll from Hearld Square to Times Square and here are a few of the mannequins that I saw. For fun, I decided to couple them with quotes from their designer. Be sure to take a peek at our album to see more looks from the sidewalk {coming soon}!
"Girls do not dress for boys. They dress for themselves, and of course, each other. If girls dressed for boys, they’d just walk around naked at all times".
— Betsey Johnson
"I'd rather promote New York than anything else in this world because New York to me means the world".
— Donna Karan
"The inception of the Tents at Bryant Park in 1993 was the defining moment for fashion and the City of New York".
— Yeohlee Teng
“Everything is getting neater, more buttoned-up and less bohemian”.
"Craft takes time, and therefore it is luxury. You cannot do an amazingly well-made garment without taking time—not just the time it takes to make something but also the time it took the maker to come up with the idea. That is all luxury, and that has been lost because we're trying to make things faster and faster, cheaper and cheaper. The consumer tends to lose track of what luxury is".
"In hindsight, my initial love for fashion was about hope and evolving to become the type of woman I wanted to be: strong, confident and feminine. I always loved the idea of dressing up--my wardrobe and how I present myself reflecting how I feel on the inside. That is what I do for other people now. I give women the means to express themselves and be who they are and who they aspire to be, and I think there is a real beauty in this".
(in reference to an earlier collection)
"I didn't want it to look cheap. Buyers see every trick in the book, and they want clothes that are wearable".
