Sew Fab in Kiki Magazine

This month, Sew Fab: Sewing and Style for Young Fashionistas is featured in Kiki Magazine! If you aren’t familiar, Kiki Magazine is an independent girl-positive publication that helps foster creativity and adventure in young ladies. According to Kiki, “You’ll learn as much about yourself as you will about sewing if you pick up this book [Sew Fab].”

Make sure to pick up a copy this month and also check out the Sassy Spectacles contest!

Tann & Kathreen's Thesis Collection

My friends, Pratt Institute seniors, Tann and Kathreen are raising funds via Kickstarter to produce their thesis collections. The Creative Cookie just pledged to back their project and I hope you'll join us in supporting this creative cause.

Here's a word from each designer:

TANN

The donations I receive will go toward building a fully fashioned 8-12 look collection. It will allow me to explore accessories for the collection and shoes. It will also lead me into my future endeavors after Pratt: starting start my own line, Tann Par. Tann Par aims to bring innovative clothing to a special customer. Avoiding the corporate structure of the fashion industry...

KATHREEN

Your generous donation will aid me in producing a thesis collection that I've been researching and developing for several months. The eight to twelve ensembles I must create (from pattern to garment) are an exploration of the lesson stars can teach us about ourselves and everything around us. The completion of this collection would mean a life-altering degree in fashion design and the start of a promising career in the field...

Learn more about their collections by watching below and visiting their Kickstarter page.

Only three days left to give -- let's go :).

A Portie Story

Earlier this summer, kamau and I spent an adventurous week in Port Antonio, Jamaica!

I was instantly drawn to the colorful button-down gingham dresses of the school girls and began the hunt for a fabric shop, while exploring the alluring city.

With advice from the locals, we found our way to the Royal Mall in the heart of Port Antonio. On the 2nd floor we discovered a quaint fabric shop with the materials we needed.

After a few discussions on the beach we decided that it would be best to use the fabric to make bow ties. We're calling them "The Portie" because Port Antonio is the capital city of the Portland Parish, which is sometimes called "Portie" for short.

I hope you'll join us on Friday, 9/12, for the Tye Tomon reception and the official launch of 'The Portie'. It would be neat!

Curve Camo

My aunt Brenda is designing a garment to reduce the appearance of the curvature caused by Scoliosis. To put things in perspective, Scoliosis affects 2-3 percent of the population, that's an estimated 6 - 9 million people in the United States. Scoliosis can develop in infancy or early childhood. My mom and aunt have this condition and I'm compelled to help. You can too!

Please take her short survey by October 16 if you, or a loved one, could benefit from this garment. You/they may have the opportunity to try it for free!

Fashion & DIY at MoCA

For kids and teens ages 12-19 who love fashion or simply making things themselves, participants will get an up-close look at selected garments and accessories featured in the museum's Shanghai Glamour and Front Row exhibitions and then use their experiences as inspiration for their own original accessories. At the end of the workshop, each participant's work will be photographed and included in a DIY DAY online look book on MOCA’s Tumblr. Everyone can bring home their own DIY accessories. - See more at: http://www.mocanyc.org/visit/events/summer_diy_days_accessory_making_workshop_0#sthash.BY87GvDI.dpuf

I'll be presenting at the Museum of Chinese in America (MoCA), next Saturday (7/27), as a part of their education programming for Shanghai Glamour + Front Row exhibitions. Participants will get an upclose look at the accessories and garments in the exhibitions and an afternoon of DIY accessory design with moi! Using Swarovski elements and found items (like hex nuts and bolts) we'll make one of a kind creations to ♥♥♥. Register and find out more here!
