Designer and Creator Jojo Perell Steps into the Fashion World with Trendy Shirts

At 17-years-old Jojo Perell runs her own Etsy shop and Depop shop where she sells her charming, sparkly, and trendy creations. She grew up in Brooklyn, New York, and hopes her love for sewing and passion for fashion will carry her into a creative career.

When Jojo was younger, she attended fashion camp with Lesley Ware where she learned to sew. As she got older, her interests changed, but a TikTok thrift flip brought her back. This inspired her to restore her love for sewing, but said, “I did it all wrong. I didn’t remember anything!” She started taking classes with The Creative Cookie, with instructor Bianca Norris, again to relearn the craft.

She began making clothes when she found these “really cool vintage tops” on Depop, but they were being marked-up as high as $200. Jojo said, “I know they thrifted it for like $10”. She fell in love with one over-priced top in particular, the butterfly top, so instead of paying the absurd value, she P0-1 decided to make it herself. She thought to herself, “Oh, I can make these for significantly cheaper than what they are selling the vintage t-shirts for.” When Jojo went to Stretch House, a spandex fabric store to buy the butterfly top fabric, she fell in love with all the patterns and colors. She couldn’t help herself and began making all kinds of spandex tops. This craft is so important to Jojo because she loves “being able to make something that either...no one else has or something that is made by you.”

After she decided to make the butterfly top, Jojo fell in love with making her own clothes. However, the butterfly top that she first made remains her favorite piece and can still be found on her website.  Everything she creates is made to order and, while there is no variety in sizes offered right now, as she grows her business, she hopes to have a full range of sizes.

Jojo plans to attend SCAD, Savannah College of Art & Design, in the Fall and hopes to pursue a creative career back in New York City.

Jojo said that making clothes is, “exciting! Sometimes it gives me butterflies. Sometimes it’s frustrating, like today my sewing machines decided to break.” To her, it’s this combination that makes her creations so exciting to make. If others want to follow in Jojo’s footsteps, she said, “Find things that you really like (and) try to make it for yourself.” Jojo believes the best way to accomplish this is to really enjoy it. She said, “If you really like something then you’re gonna be driven enough to accomplish your goals.”

You can find Jojo’s work on her Instagram: @borntodieboutique and on both her Etsy and Depop shops.

Fashion is Self Care with Ella Rose Berhe-Lumax

Ella Rose Berhe-Lumax is an inspiring young creative who founded the Brooklyn Craft Club. She enjoys art, fashion, sewing and, most importantly, crafting with her friends. Read below to learn what self-care means to her in the world of fashion and crafting and make sure to follow along on her journey by checking out her club’s Instagram: @brooklyncraftclub!

Image7

CC: Tell me a bit about yourself. What do you do?

ER: My name is Ella Rose Berhe-Lumax. I am 10-years-old. I am the founder of Brooklyn Craft Club. I like dancing, crafting, drawing and writing.

CC: What got you into crafting and what made you want to start something like the Brooklyn Craft Club?

ER: When I moved into the school that I am in now, we had an art program but we couldn’t really express ourselves. Our art teacher had a really set image of what we could call art. So, we had to do everything in a really specific way and we couldn’t really color outside the lines. So, I wanted to make something where me and my friends could express ourselves and we didn’t have to follow the rules of her definition of art. So, I decided to start Brooklyn Craft Club!

CC: What is Brooklyn Craft Club?

ER: It is a club where me and my friends do crafts!

CC: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

ER: I would like for us (Brooklyn Craft Club) to move onto a membership box so that we can deliver craft supplies to other people and not just the people in our community. Image6

Cc: How did you find out about the Creative Cookie?

ER: I met her (Lesley Ware) on another online craft series on Instagram. She reached out to me and we started talking that way.

CC: Why are crafting and fashion and art so important to you?

ER: I just like expressing myself! I love to do stuff with my hands; I’m always fidgeting with something. When I’m crafting or sewing, it helps me put the fidgeting to use.

CC: What is your idea of “fashion as self-care” and why?

ER: I actually would say it’s this scrunchie that I just made yesterday. I have a fun time with scrunchies! If my hair is up, I usually have one in my hair. So, it’s just really fun to make them and really easy to make them, as well.

CC: How would you encourage others to start something similar to the Brooklyn Craft Club at such a young age?

ER: I would just say, find something that makes you happy! And, if you have an idea, make sure to write it down. I have so many ideas running through my head and I forget to write them down. Keep a journal with all your ideas! If you have an idea, stick to it and remember to always be creative!

Our 1st Virtual Workshop!

Hello Friends,

Long time no see :)

I hope you all are safe inside your homes during the sensitive climate of the COVID-19 pandemic. Please wash your hands and participate in the efforts to keep you, your family, friends, and pets healthy. I am optimistic that we will be able to get through this together!

We (yes, we, I have a small team that I’ll introduce in an upcoming message) would like to offer an experimental virtual fashion workshop, for ages 10+, that will help young people to be creative at home. In the workshop students will learn basic hand sewing skills that they can use to create a garment or accessory!

Our 1st workshop block will be held on Thursday, March 26th and Monday March, 30th. In the 1st class students will get a introduction + a demo while the 2nd class will be focused on sharing projects + a celebration!

We are planning to expand our virtual offerings, via Zoom, in the days to come so stay tuned  for a full schedule of classes, including one-on-one sessions!

As always, thank you for being a loyal supporter!

Hugs + stars,

Lesley

The Met Teen Fashion Studio, pt. 1

Here's a throwback to the Teen Fashion Studio at The Metropolitan Museum of Art last summer inspired by the Heavenly Bodies exhibit. I had an enchanting and fun week working with everyone (the young designers, Met staff, interns) we even got a private tour of the garments Cloisters with Jessica Glasscock of the Costume Institute.

Releasing a short video about the process leading up to this soon :). Their creations were sew dope!

Alicia Keys New Short Film

Alicia Keys released a new A.V. Rockwell-directed short film, The Gospel, and we kind of love it! The film is exclusively on Tidal so if you're not a subscriber it might be a little hard to find. Everything was shot in New York City, Alicia's hometown. Looking forward to the full album, Here, on Friday, November 4th!

Speaking of 'here' Kamau and I happened to be at a party at Pioneer Works, in Red Hook, earlier this year and Keys was there too! We all ended up on the W Magazine site. Click to see more photos!
