Princess + Dress

My intern, Asatta, and I recently worked with Zilpha M., an 8 year old, to create this awesome dress! She had her own fabric and pattern that she got for Christmas. It took us 2 days to complete this project and it was quite fun. We loved the finished product! It looks like something that a princess would wear; 'sew' perfect for, Zilpha! I should check to see if she's wearing it for Halloween :).

Yeah, go, Zilpha!

10 Vintage Sewing Patterns That Are Still Totally Adorable

Isn’t it fun to walk into a vintage clothing store or thrift shop and see what people used to wear years and years ago? Sometimes the clothes look a little strange (like polyester bellbottoms or crocheted ponchos), but some of the clothes look just as cute today (or cuter)! Long before “DIY” was cool, people would often make their own clothes and use patterns that they’d buy from the local drugstore. You can use these same patterns to make some vintage-inspired clothes of your own!

  1. Although this pattern is for ballerinas or for Halloween, we think that a big tulle skirt is always in style.

  1. You can’t really go wrong with these classics—a blazer, plaid pants, and a cute beret. This pattern looks like a page right out of a J.Crew catalog.

  1. We’re looooving this pattern for a 1950’s poodle skirt—except this skirt has a little dachshund on it!

  1. Cropped tops are all the rage these days, but they were also popular in the 1940’s. Could these outfits be any more perfect for a summer day at the beach?

  1. This pattern for a flouncy skirt is perfect for showing off school spirit or for an afternoon at the roller rink.

  1. If you walked down the street in one of these outfits today, you’d still be looking super-cool. Can we have that jacket in the middle, puh-lease?!

Vintage_pattern_6

  1. These jackets and skirts scream 1960’s, and we’re definitely digging those haircuts.

Vintage_pattern_7

  1. Yup, there’s those cropped tops again, when they became popular another time in the 1970’s. Those platform sandals and clogs are pretty awesome, too.

  1. Wait, didn’t we just see these shirts the other day at Anthropologie? The embroidery is adorable, and we also love the fact that one of these girls appears to be talking with a friendly squirrel.

10. It’s a mod, mod world! Mini skirts, boxy jackets, and tall knee socks. And we’d totally rock that chevron print right now.

Super Selected's NY Fashion Week List

We are honored that Tye Tomon made Super Selected's 25 Black Fashion Designers Who Killed it At New York Fashion Week Spring 2015 list! Super Selected is a site we love that writes about art, fashion, culture and life. We were mentioned among other black designers, some of which I've covered on this blog, including Tracy Reese and Laquan Smith. How about that?

See who else made the list -- check it out!
