The Creative Cookie Thrift Pop Up

I’m taking my own advice and parting ways with a few pieces that I’ve loved and worn. Each piece has a unique story. Trying them on again made me want to keep them all but life has changed and it’s time to create space for newly thrifted and vintage treasures.

Typically, I go to an assortment of resale shops when I clear my closet but who wants to be zipping around with bags of dresses during a pandemic? So, this year I’m turning to social media. My dear friend Sammy Davis, of Thrift Boss Babes, advised me on the best way to sell them. I’m excited to see what happens!

Thrift_Flyer

The new items will drop at 10:30a on the following days @creativecookie (instagram):

  • Collection 1: Monday 7/20
  • Collection 2: Wednesday 7/22
  • Collection 3: Friday 7/24
    • Mailing everything on Saturday (updated to Monday)!!!

The fab thing about these garments are that they were all thrifted or from a vintage shop (except a few like the yellow H&M dress). I am selling everything for $9 - 20 + shipping ($6.50 for 2 garments and $3 for each additional for domestic orders - international rates are higher). If you need additional measurements (hip, back length, sleeve length, neck width, upper arm circumference, etc), email lware@thecreativecookie.com.

Steps to securing your item(s):

1: DM (or email) me a list of what you want to purchase. I’ll write back confirming that the item has not been sold and will request your shipping address.

2: Make a payment using one of the following options, within one hour:

Venmo: @Lesley-Ware

Cash Ap: $LesleyDWare

Zelle or PayPal: lware@thecreativecookie.com

Credit Card: Indicate which item(s) you want to buy l and will send an invoice

3: Wait for your USPS tracking number by the end of the week.

*A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Black Girls Sew, one of my favorite nonprofits.

Material, size, and measurements

100% Cotton

Official Girl Scouts of the USA Pleated Uniform Shorts $10

When I worked at GSUSA I loved pairing these shorts with a Scout t-shirt or blouse. These are in good condition and will last years. Nice pockets, double button closure, and partially elastic waistband.  (photographed with the African Print Top because the green matches perfectly)

Material, size, and measurements

50964012-08DF-4A3F-86CD-8272A37C3419

H&M Yellow Dress $16

This dress was purchased right after I moved to NYC from H&M about 13 years ago. This was when H&M clothing was top quality. When wearing this dress I’ve been asked the strangest things like “are you an African princess”.  Lots of sweet details like button- down side neckline, bust darts, invisible zipper and ¾ length sleeves. Fully lined missing belt but you can improvise.

Material, size, and measurements

100% Polyester

Size 6

Waist 28 inches / Length 41 inches

50964012-08DF-4A3F-86CD-8272A37C3419

Burt Stanley Vintage Dress $19

This dress is adorable. I’m guessing it’s from the 1960s. Navy and off white fun for a nautical themed garden party (if that’s a thing)! V-neck, pointed collar w/ hook and eye detail in back.

Phase II California 2-piece set $20 (SOLD)

This is the cutest set - I’m guessing it’s from the early 80s! I purchased it from a vintage shop in Gowanus BK. I was drawn to the floral print medley against forest green. I never wore the two pieces together because it’s a lot of look but it’s fun to wear in parts! The collar, on the top, reminds me of a butterfly and it ties in the back for a flattering fit. The sleeves have a cute gathered detail at the top. The pants are high waisted, bell bottom, with a zipper at the back seam.

Material, size, and measurements

Polyester

Size 6

Top : Bust 32 / Waist 24

50964012-08DF-4A3F-86CD-8272A37C3419

Lanz Original Seafoam Green Ball Gown $17 (SOLD)

This is a great dress - I’d describe it as soft and breezy. I’m guessing it’s from the 70s or 80s. It’s the perfect candidate for a snazzy upcycle or you can wear it as is. Super cute bow detail and off the shoulder w/ straps. Perfect for the days you want to stand out!

Material, size, and measurements

100% Cotton / Made in USA

Size 4

Bust 28 / Waist 26 / Length 44

Teal Liz Claiborne Dress $13

This dress came from my favorite thrift shop in my hometown Muskegon, Michigan - Rescued Treasures! This dress is well made and comfortable. The last time I wore this was to a book signing in Pittsburgh in 2016. Fully lined, ruched sleeve, silk and princess seams. What's not to love!?

Material, size, and measurements

100% silk

Size 4

Bust 34 / Waist 32 / Length 38

3092228F-DFD3-4243-89D4-F70E13DB5CB4

Black Red Piped Dress $10

This dress came from a sweet vintage shop in Oakland, California. I love this dress - it appears to be home sewn and every time I wear it’s like wearing a hug or a quilt even though it’s not heavy. It’s cute belted or oversized with cowgirl boots!

Material, size, and measurements

100% Cotton

Size unknown - likely medium or large

Comes with belt

Material, size, and measurements

100% Silk

Size 8

3673F53A-818C-4B11-989B-C818D9D7A4FF

Size 2

AC02607B-1C27-41E1-AD86-0CD63E9E67FA

H+M Circle Skirt $13

This skirt is very cute and heavy. I picked it up at Gotham Thrift Shop in Ridgewood Queens. I was hoping to wear it the day before or after my wedding, with a fun blouse, but it was a little too small and it does not quite zip.

‘A’ Cup Run

The same week that I was inducted onto the itty-bitty titty committee, I somehow found myself on the road with my dad in route to procure my first bra. Most of the girls in my 6th grade class had started to bloom. I was at the smaller end of the spectrum and had no clue that braless life would end so abruptly. After days of my dad threatening to buy me a “brassiere”, the morning had come to make the purchase. My mom wanted no parts in this conspiracy, she thought my chest was just fine.

Past trips to Grand Rapids, Michigan, for Rogers’ department store visits were like magical bonding experiences between my father and I. The agenda typically included the 45-minute drive, 2-3 hours of shopping, and a stop at McDonald’s for a chicken nugget Happy Meal before heading home. But on this humid September Saturday, the radio was off and my dad seemed to be intently focused on the highway ahead. I wanted to cry but instead I fell asleep, on the passenger’s side, to the soft hum of the air conditioner.  I was not excited about the imminent shopping experience or the thought of wearing an unnecessary brace around my body.

When I woke up we were cruising store's parking lot in search of a space to accommodate my father’s silver 87’ Buick. After circling the lot we parked. My dad rolled up his window and we began our venture.  Weekends were always hectic at Rogers. On our walk to the door, I observed people as they entered and exited the store.   Some were empty handed while others carried white shopping bags with the Rogers’ logo proudly emobosed on both sides. As we walked through the revolving doors, a waif of perfume hit me and I started to feel nauseous. I followed my dad's footsteps as he led the way cutting though the bustling cosmetics department, the display of delightful chocolates, and the mannequins who stood in the Misses’ department, styled in what seemed to be too warm for the season.

We stepped on to the escalator and I knew that our destination was near. As the moving staircase inched us closer, I began to panic. "Who is going to help me pick out a bra!?” I quirkly blurted. "We'll ask one of the ladies who works here", he explained in a firm yet gentle tone.  “O.k.”, I responded relieved but still extremely uncomfortable. On our way to the undies we stopped to price a pair of navy blue corduroy pants that would be suitable for Michigan winter weather. The summer had ended too soon.

As we approached the undergarments, a familiar face emerged. It was the young woman that had assisted with my selection of an Easter dress earlier that year. After swapping pleasantries, my dad announced, "It's time for Lesley to have her first bra." I felt like a chocolate bunny that had been abandoned in the heat; I could have easily melted onto freshly waxed tiles beneath us.

Eventually disappearing down the ales, my dad found himself a haven in the pod of chairs adjacent the shoe department on the other side of the floor. Now it was just the sales associate, let’s call her Rachel, and me surrounded by racks and end caps stocked with socks, tights, slips, panties, and an impressive assortment of mostly pastel training bras. She asked me which ones I liked the most--prints or the solids? I opted for the solids because the prints were all cartoon characters, like Tweedy Bird and the Road Runner, which made zero sense. The bras I choose had little bows carefully stitched in the center with a pinch of lacy elastic neatly along the edge. Rachel pulled a few from the rack and grabbed a yellow measuring tape. Seven minutes later we emerged from the dressing room-- my first bra fitting was complete! The process was quick, painless, and pointless.

Rachel and I found my dad flipping through catalog pages to melodic-soft rock from overhead. The three of us then shifted towards the register to check out. Rachel removed the bras from the white plastic hangers, neatly wrapped the stretchy items in tissue paper, and then swiped my dad’s card. While he signed the receipt, she proudly stepped from behind the counter to hand me my bag containing four trainers for my itty-bittys.

We walked out of the hues of yellow, pink, and purple, in the Girls’ department, through a sea of blue, green, and gray, in Boys’. On this jaunt to the escalator, I swung the embossed bag back and forth. It was the 1st time I realized that we can’t always control what’s in the bag but we do have power over how we handle it. As we made our decent back to the 1st floor, I noticed a difference in me.
